How does it work?
Remote Backup works basically like regular data backup software, with one important difference. Instead of sending backups to a tape drive or other media attached to the computer it is backing up, our backup software sends the backup over the Internet, regular telephone lines or network connections safely off site to our secure data centres in London.
Why London ?
After much research and deliberation we came to the conclusion that we could best serve our South African clients from UK data centers. There were three primary reasons for this.
1) Data safety – the data protection laws in the UK are significantly stronger and fall under the European union which ensure your data is protected 100% by the high courts.
2) Infrastructure – We are able to deliver world class facilities at very competitive rates. For example your data is protected in state of the art facilities with a 10Gbps backbone and a 100Mbps Internet connection for ultra fast restores.
3) Using international couriers we can receive or send back your data (always encrypted with military grade encryption) from data center to your door on hardives within 24 hours or visa versa. (for large restores or crashed servers) So it makes little difference where we are located. Plus all the on site support you would expect is delivered through a network of local partners.
K9VAULT allows you to securely backup your important information to a rock solid off site environment. Each days backup will be stored on 2 mirrored backup servers. Each server has the latest RAID technology to ensure that your data is safe.
How safe is my data ?
We understand how important your data is to you. After all it is our business to protect your data and we do this with utmost integrity. With K9VAULT your data is fully encrypted. Both when it is transferred to our server AND while it is being stored. Without your Encryption Key nobody can read or see any of your data. Even we cannot see it. So NEVER, EVER lose your Encryption key if you don’t want us to store it. The data centers themselves are fully secured – Data Center infrastructure
Isn’t it going to expensive to backup over ADSL ?
There’s no question – the cost of bandwidth in South Africa is relatively high at the moment. It is, however, becoming more affordable.
We have done a number of things to ensure that your costs are kept to a minimum. (no more than any other local online backup provider and in many cases much cheaper)
- After your first backup all backups are incremental. This means that the backup software checks on your computer which files have changed and what information in those files have specifically changed. And then only uploads those specific changes. On average you can expect between 1-3% changes to your data set daily. This means for every 1Gb of data on average there will be only 10Mb of backup per day. A user with a 1GB of backup data will typically use about 5% maximum of their 1GB ADSL cap per month, backing up all their data.
- For your initial backup we offer a data collection courier service. You use our software to create a backup onto a hard disk.(or whatever media will fit your data set) You ship us the backed up data which we will upload to the backup servers. From then on you simply backup the new files and incremental changes over the Internet. The cost – free of charge from our perspective. You send us the data at your cost (typically less than R200 courier and we will ship it back in time of need at our cost. We can also ship and collect one of our own drives if you prefer.
- Our backup software allows you to keep a local copy of all your data on the server. In this sense it works like any other backup software. This allows you to restore at high speeds from your own server/laptop on the LAN. Only the differences are sent to our data center. Should your server crash or your data is lost for whatever reason (stolen, fire, flood , corruption etc) we will have your entire data set back to you within 24 hours.
What happens if i write over a file or delete a file – do you keep more than one copy ?
We keep as many copies as you would like to configure the backup software to do so. So you could have a copy of your important word documents for every day of the week for the last year if you liked.Your data is safe.

Yes you can – you would install the operating system on new hardware – then simply run a restore which would install all application and patches etc and bring your system to the same state it was in at the last backup.
